The Jessie Thomson Cartoon Experience
6 weeks of intense cartoon voice training. 18 hours in studio with one of Canada’s top cartoon voice directors will prepare you for a career in cartoons. Professionals only. Max. 8 performers personal work recorded to cd for home review.

Week 1: Introductions
1. Demystifying voice acting for cartoons
2. Discussion of terms like ‘cartoony’, ‘ compression’
3. The audition experience, what to expect, who is there, what questions to ask
4. How to get the most out of your 7 allotted minutes, accents, mock auditions
5. Budgets and schedules - how this affects the actor’s choices

Week 2: The Audition
1. Audition protocol - work from previously assigned scenes, one-on-one

Week 3: Walla - Physicalization - Imagination
1. Walla - All the acting that happens between and during the lines of dialogue
2. Concept of ‘library’
3. Doing stuff ‘wild’, gestures, exploration of laughter, vocal expressions

Week 4: Scene Work - Basic
1. Ensemble scene work, short prep time, homework
2. Studio protocol, creating a scene of well-developed characters
3. Mic. technique, technical demands of studio, scenework homework

Week 5: Scene Work - Advanced
1. Physicalization, imagination, playing multiple characters
2. Listening as well as talking, sharing a scene with other actors

Week 6: Wrapping it up
1. Return to the audition experience - prep work, 3-characters, 3 takes
2. Class discussion, note taking, self-evaluation.
